D2 · Referee destruction
Referee removal
If everyone who could check the claim is an enemy, the claim never gets checked.
Function: Disqualify, in advance and as a class, every institution that could adjudicate the speaker’s claims.
- The move
- Disqualifies every adjudicator as a class, in advance.
- The tell
- The label tracks valence, not accuracy — friendly stories from the same outlets are cited approvingly.
- The counter
- “Pick this one story: what exactly did it get wrong?”
Specimens
“The FAKE NEWS media (failing @nytimes, @NBCNews, @ABC, @CBS, @CNN) is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American People!”
Quoted in full: the tweet distinguishes “not my enemy” from “the enemy of the American People” — the class label attaches to the audience’s enemy, not the speaker’s, which is the device.
“fake news” as a class label applied to unfavorable coverage as such
Dated instances where accurate stories were so labeled, with later adjudication cited, to be added per the sourcing bar.
The map
| Surface claim | The press is dishonest |
|---|---|
| Presupposed frame | Coverage critical of the speaker is thereby corrupt |
| Hidden warrant | Hostile source ⇒ false content (genetic fallacy, weaponized) |
| Forbidden question | Is this particular report accurate? |
| Emotional cue | Betrayal by elites; contempt |
| Permitted conclusion | Only the speaker reliably informs you |
| Excluded conclusion | An outlet can be biased and correct on a given story |

Deetz mapping
Which of Deetz’s (1992) closure strategies this device instantiates:
- Disqualification (its purest form)
- Subjectification (all coverage reduced to “their opinion”)
Interactions
- pre-clears D3 · Evidence laundering — With referees gone, unsourced claims meet no adjudicator.
- prerequisite for D6 · Heads-I-win priors — Fraud claims require courts and media to be pre-discredited.
- mutually reinforcing D1 · Persecution transfer — Each supplies the other’s cast of villains.

Lineage
The full “enemy of the people” career: Roman hostis publicus; Robespierre’s Terror-era usage; the Soviet vrag naroda, denounced by Khrushchev in the 1956 Secret Speech precisely because it foreclosed all defense; Ibsen’s 1882 play as the ironic mirror — then February 2017.

The innocent reading
Media criticism is legitimate and often warranted; specific outlets err and skew, and saying so is healthy.
Why the pattern holds anyway
Legitimate media criticism is particular — this story, this error, this correction demanded. The corpus move is categorical: the class label attaches to coverage as a function of valence, not accuracy, which is checkable — favorable stories from the same outlets are cited approvingly. Categorical plus valence-contingent equals referee removal, not criticism.
The counter-move
De-categorize: “Pick this one story. What did it get wrong, specifically? If nothing, the label is doing the work the evidence was supposed to do.”

In evidence
- R-2026-07-02 (open) — publication of an unfavorable poll by a major outlet: The poll will be dismissed via D2 (referee removal) as a class property of the outlet, without engagement of methodology; a favorable poll from a comparable outlet will be cited approvingly within the same window if one exists.
